Fix Windows 7 Sidebar With UAC Off

As many of you undoubtedly know already, in Windows 7 Beta 1, disabling UAC also causes the gadgets to stop working. This can be very annoying, especially for the power users who turn off UAC, or for those who are turning it of in order to avoid that nasty token elevation bug that rears it’s ugly head out of random on some machines.
The reason for this is that Microsoft made the assumption that the sidebar process would never be run in an elevated state. So when you try to start it with UAC disabled it detects that it would have to run elevated, so it just does nothing to abide by the pre-set rules set by Microsoft. Thankfully there is an undocumented registry setting to correct this issue.

  1. Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe)
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sidebar\Settings
  3. Create a new DWORD Value called AllowElevatedProcess
  4. Set the value of the new DWORD to 1
  5. Close the registry editor. Your gadgets should work now. No reboot or anything necessary.
So there you have it, an actual fix to the issue that doesn’t require swapping out the sidebar executable like some sites suggest *cough* mydigitallife *cough*.

Vi è arrivata a voi una mail della newsletter Microsoft, a tema TechNet, in cui vi "invita" a provare alcune features presenti ma poco conosciute (a parte Search Federation e BitLocker-to-Go)? :)

Me ne aspetto altre, visto che risulto iscritto anche alle newsletter Beta di MSDN, nonché quella del sito ufficiale :asd:

Peccato che non possa provarne praticamente nessuna, forse (dico forse) solo Bitlocker-to-Go (ma la mia chiavetta ha dentro anche buona parte del backup, e non ne ho un altra da battaglia funzionante...) e Powershell...
 
Cliccando con tasto destro e poi Gadgets, non mi si apre niente, anche se vado sul pannello di controllo e premo add gadgets o remove o qualche altra cosa riguardo i gadgets, nn si apre nulla, come mai?

L'UAC è abilitato oppure no? Se sì, è probabilmente un bug. Se no, e non vuoi riattivarlo, c'è la procedura descritta da dovella alla pagina precedente ;)

perchè per abitudine?
io l'avevo disattivato anche su vista... :lol: quindi per abitudine mi pareva meglio disattivarlo anche qui... più che altro perchè mi da fastidio che mi continui a chiedere se installare una cosa... cavolo se ci clicco sopra è perchè voglio... no?
poi è una doppia XXXXXX perchè basta che faccio si sono sicuro che mi fa andare avanti... quindi... inutile perdita di tempo...

Beh, io su Vista non l'ho MAI disattivato e di certo non lo farò qui su Seven.
Anzi, come ho già detto, l'ho sparato al massimo:P
E poi io mi fido di paperino :asd:
 
Parere mio: UAC va disabilitato solo in due casi. O si ha perfetta padronanza delle proprie azioni, o si utilizza una soluzione più potente (il Defense+ del Comodo Firewall lo potrei quasi anche utilizzare da solo, volendo :) ). Ma questo è solo il mio parere, chiunque è libero di decidere cosa farne dell'UAC ;)
 
non so se ne era gia parlato, ma ho notato un piccolo bug: le finestre di messenger (e forse qualche volta mi è capitato pure con quelle di firefox) a volte spariscono, come se diventassero trasparenti, e si vede solo bordino esterno. per visualizzarle correttamente, devo chiuderle premendo la X sull'anteprima visualizzata nella barra, e riaprirle.

è mai capitato anche voi?
