Hai provato con un lettore video alternativo a VLC? su Kubuntu ne hai. Da dove prendi il ".mkv"? può essere che è codificato male. Se proprio non riesci a risolvere, e il problema è con tutti gli ".mkv", come ultima spiaggia, prova a fare u navanzamento di versione a Kubuntu 15.04.

Ho provato VLC, smplayer e dragon player. L'mkv lo vedo benissimo sul fisso, per fare un avanzamento di versione devo dare apt-get dist-upgrade, giusto?

Prima di tutto, devi elencare tutto i PPA, che hai installato, in modo da rimuoverli e poi ti do tutti i comandi, perché ancora non hai nessuna notifica di avanzamento alla 15.04, perché viene rilasciata a fine mese. Se le hai provate tutte, a questo punto proviamo con la 15.04, dove ha driver, codec e tutto all'ultima versione. Però è strano, ho scheda video NVIDIA, e i video li vedo benissimo, sia con i driver open source, che con i proprietari.

Quelli sono i repository ufficiali, i PPA sono in un'altra cartella. Fai cosi: Sulle impostazioni dovresti avere un opzioni con le sorgenti software, se non la trovi, posta il risultato di questo comando:

Sappi che c'è la possibilità che qualcosa vada storto, sopratutto perché ci sarà il passaggio da kde4-> kde5, upstart-> systemd etc...

:shocked:cosi poche?? Togliamo quelli più problematiche, perché riguardano i driver video e xorg:

sudo ppa-purge [B]ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa[/B]
rimuoviamo i driver nvidia, sulla 15.04 hai gli ultimi disponibili, ti basta andare su "driver aggiuntivi":

sudo apt-get remove nvidia*
Codice: 
sudo apt-get autoremove
C'è la possibilità di dover riavviare se hai qualche errore nel rimuovere dei moduli di nvidia.

In questo modo retrocedi i pacchetti alla versione ufficiale di ubuntu 14.10, adesso modifichiamo i repository per puntare alla 15.04(vivid):

kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list
inserisci la password di root, e modifica da utopic a vivid, chiudi e salva:

sudo apt-get update
Aggiorni i repository, se hai qualche errore postalo, altrirmenti continua:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
