Xubuntu [persa password]...Le ho provate quasi tutte

Ciao a tutti ho un grosso....grossissimo problema.
Premetto che è la prima volta che lavoro su linux....
...sono alle prese con la mia tesi di laurea e ho ereditato un progetto su una macchina virtuale sulla quale è installato Xubuntu 9.10.
Il fattaccio è che non mi è possibile installare alcuna nuova applicazione in quanto il tipo prima di me ha immesso una password sul sudo.
Sono 2 giorni che leggo forum e guide, la cosa da fare sarebbe cambiare questa passwd avviando il sistema in recovery mode e bla bla bla....purtroppo proprio non riesco ad entrare in questo cacchio di recovery mode!!!
Al riavvio del sistema ho premuto esc quando inizia a caricare e mi esce un "boot menu" dove trovo una lista:

... ho anche provato a premere esc o tenere premuto shift mentre esce la scritta "grub loading...",ma niente!
Per quanto riguarda il timeout del grub, se qualcuno credesse che nn visualizzo la schermata del conto alla rovescia a causa sua, non posso modificarlo poichè temo di nn avere i permessi.
Non è che il grub è coperto da passwd?Ho letto su qualche forum che in quel caso la procedura di ripristino sarebbe diversa...

oltre a seguire la guida indicata da zesto, vorrei sapere una cosa...quando avvii il pc, quando ti esce il menù di grub non riesci ad accedere alla recovery mode? in genere è la seconda voce nel menù...

A me è successo una volta anni fa di perdere una password di root. Non ricordo benissimo la procedura, ma risolsi con una live, da cui feci un chroot sulla partizione su cui era installato il sistema operativo originale e da lì ho cambiato la pwd. Ripeto, non ricordo bene come fu, ma ci ho messo meno di 15 minuti

Come dice Alex Mahone controlla se nel grub trovi la voce recovery mode, dovrebbe esserci almeno che non sia stata disattivata, in questo caso credo che basti un comando dal live cd.

Edit: come non detto, su macchina virtuale è normale che non ci sia il grub
