Per un NAS una distro vale l'altra. Se deve fare solo da NAS più leggera è, meglio è.
FreeNAS non l'ho mai provato, ma ne ho sentito parlare gran bene. Non è basata su Linux ma su FreeBSD, se non hai incompatibilità hardware (FreeBSD non supporta qualunque device come i nuovi kernel linux) è sicuramente un'ottima scelta

Ah, un'ultima roba su FreeNAS: dev'essere per forza installata su un disco che non faccia parte dei dischi che vorrai condividere in rete. Quindi conviene installarla su una chiavetta USB, così puoi usare i dischi del pc per il NAS
